Uppu Cheedai Salt Seedai - Salted Seedai prepared for Gokulashtami/Krishna Jayanthi is basically a special snack prepared for the festive occasion where deep fried crisp balls are made with rice flour & little urad dal flour. Vella Seedai recipe is a very popular sweet made during Gokulashtami/Krishna Jayanthi in Tamil Nadu, Deep-fried sweet balls made of jaggery and rice flour. For a long time, I found making Vella Cheedai quite tricky as I failed many a times while trying to make them.

Steps to make Cheedai (South Indian special):
  1. First soak the rice for 2 hours drain the water and let it be samp but not wet. Then make a fine powder of it and roast it for 2 mins on low flame and keep aside. Then make a powder of urad dhal and pass this and rice flour through a sieve to get a fine powder.
  2. Now add salt hing and coconut powder and mix well. Then add melted butter and mix well. Slowly incorporate water to make a soft and smooth dough. Once done grease your hands and make small balls and deep fry it in oil and serve.

Gokulashtami/Krishna Jayanthi/Janmashtami is round the corner and is one of the important Hindu festivals celebrated as the birthday of Lord Krishna. Last year, I had shared Uppu Seedai or Salted Seedai and now I'm tempted to try its sweet counterpart, Vella Cheedai. The word "vella" in Tamil denotes Vellam which means Jaggery. Vella Cheedai Recipe Sweet Seedai is almost same as Uppu. Dedicated to the sun god, it is one of the most important festivals in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
