The ingredients needed to make Moong Masoor Daal (red and yellow lentils):
- Get 1 cup skinless Masoor daal soaked 1hr
- Make ready to taste Salt
- Get 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
- Take 1-1/2 tsp Red chilli powder or to taste
- Take 1/2 tsp Dried mango powder (optional)
- Prepare 6-7 tblsp Oil or ghee (heaped full)
- Get 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- Prepare 1 medium sized onion finely chopped
- Make ready 1-2 Green chilli finely chopped
- Take 2 tblsp Garlic peel & sliced
- Take 1 medium size Tomato finely chopped
- Take Half a bunch Fresh coriander & mint for garnishing
You can easily find these at any local South Asian store or even online. Here I have mixed yellow moong dal (de-husked green gram) and masoor (red lentils) for this recipe. However, you can also take only red lentils or yellow moongs. Moong dal brings thickness to the masoor dal in fact.
Instructions to make Moong Masoor Daal (red and yellow lentils):
- #Step_1 - - Put drained lentils in a deep non-stick pan, add 3½-4 cups water, salt, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and dried mango powder and mix well. Cover and cook till lentils are done.
- #Step_2 - - Heat oil or ghee in another non-stick pan, add onion and sauté till the onion is slightly Golden Brown. Add garlic and sute till the slightly Golden Brown add dried red chillies with cumin seeds sauté for a few seconds. Add green chilli and mix well. Add tomato and mix well.
- #Step_3 - - Add this mixture to the cooked daal and mix well. Cook for a minute. - - #Step_4 - - Transfer into a serving bowl, garnish with a coriander and serve hot with boiled rice or chapati with fresh salad.
Dal or lentil is high in protein content and helps in maintaining balance of dietary protein requirement. It is good for lowering cholesterol and controlling sugar levels. After soaking, in same water, add tomatoes, onions, and all ingredients of Spices list. Thoroughly rinse the red lentils and mung dal in a strainer under warm water. Add a little more water if the mixture becomes too dry.
